Steel - Tools for Threading Pipe

If you decide to cut and thread pipe on your own, you'll need to rent several different tools:
   1. A pipe threader (left ) consisting of a ratcheting handle and a cutting die for each diameter pipe you intend to thread (╜-inch and ╛-inch are the most common sizes in homes). You'll probably be charged separately for each die you rent. The cutting dies in rental yards take quite a beating. Look for a set without chipped or missing teeth. You'll also need cutting oil to lubricate the die; your rental yard may supply some with the threader.
   2. A pipe cutter (right ) that adjusts to the pipe sizes you intend to use.
   3. A pipe reamer to scour out the burrs from newly cut pipe.
   4. A pipe vise for both cutting and threading. Mounted on a tripod, a pipe vise firmly clamps the pipe at a comfortable height.
